Winfield Foundation Special Projects

USD 465 Foundation Teacher Grants

Each year all employees of USD 465 are given the opportunity to donate to the USD 465 Foundation through payroll deduction to a special projects fund. Staff members then have the opportunity to write a grant for something special they would like for their classes that otherwise would be unfunded.

All payroll donations are added to donations from friends of the foundation and are distributed in October and March each school year. None of the donations are used for any expense of the foundation, but all are returned to teachers and students as grants.

Since the grant program began in 1998, more than $87,000 has been awarded for teacher grant.

USD 465 Harbor Project

Following completion of the Winfield High School renovation and Winfield Middle School construction in 2004, the USD 465 Foundation assumed responsibility for a community project that would focus on beautification of the school grounds.

The Harbor Project was intended not only to add an area for students, staff, and community members to greet, but also as a way to raise funds to pay for landscaping of the entire school campus.

The Harbor, located in a courtyard just south of the high school cafeteria, will be a gathering place with tables, benches, special lighting, and a Viking ship mosaic created by 1975 graduate Tim Otte.

The Harbor and the south tower entrance of the high school honor graduates, favorite teachers or staff, special accomplishments, and other events. Bricks, pavers, benches, and other opportunities are available.

Attic Instruments Project

The first major special project of the USD 465 Foundation, Attic Instruments have given new life to old musical instruments long stored away and forgotten.

Patrons of the district were encouraged to donate these instruments to the foundation, which financed any needed repairs then donated the instruments to the district.

In this way, more than 70 instruments have been returned to their original purpose, and are in use by young musicians who otherwise would not have been able to participate in music programs.

For more information or to donate an instrument, contact Debra Schwyhart at debra_schwyhart@usd465.com.
